Aspects on regionalisation of water supply and sanitation services in Falesti and Edinet rayons were examined on 11 September during several meetings at North Regional Development Agency (RDA). Local public authorities, representatives of municipal enterprises providing water supply and sanitation services (WSS), of ‘Modernization of Local Public Services in the Republic of Moldova’ project implemented by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ and North RDA specialists took part in the discussions.

During the meetings, organised under the projects for water supply and sanitation services improvement in Edinet municipality and Falesti town, financed by the European Union a number of legal and organisational aspects were discussed relating to the regionalisation of water supply and sanitation services providers, as well as the need of strengthening a regional water supply and sanitation system.

North RDA director Vitalii Povonschii pointed out that the regionalisation of water supply services is welcome as the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment promotes largely its implementation through projects financed from the National Fund for Regional Development. In this context, the North RDA director reminded that the WSS projects implemented by the Agency until now in Falesti rayon require further assistance in order to become sustainable.

Referring to the necessity and advantages of service regionalisation, North RDA director Vitalii Povonschii indicated that the main argument in favour of this option lies in the fact, that the major regional disparities in the Republic of Moldova are not between development regions, but at lower levels of development micro-regions.

The projects ‘Improvement of water supply and sanitation services in Falesti town’ and ‘Improvement of water supply and sanitation services in Edinet municipality’ are financed by the European Union in cooperation with the ‘Modernization of Local Public Services in the Republic of Moldova’ project implemented by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment and North RDA and financially supported by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Swedish Government, Romanian Government and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
