Edinet, 1 December 2015. Local public authorities in North Development Region of the Republic of Moldova met in a regional conference to discuss new ways of Solid Waste Management, based on inter-municipal cooperation.

Through this regional conference, the Ministry of Environment (MoE) and the Ministry of Regional Development and Construction (MRDC) with the support of the German Development Cooperation through GIZ, informed local public administrations about the current situation in the field of solid waste management, as well as on the cooperation with them in order to develop feasibility studies for the creation of integrated waste management systems, in accordance with the Waste Management Strategy in Moldova for 2013-2027, approved by Government Decision no. 248 of 10.04.2013.

The event was attended by local public authorities levels I and II, sanitation service operators and NGOs that are involved in the organization of waste management and information of civil society on new ways of waste management.

During the regional conference from Edinet, it was assessed the degree of implementation of the objectives of the National Waste Management Strategy and Regional Waste Management Plans; there were established priority activities in the medium term with the involvement of relevant stakeholders; it has been conducted a survey on the creation of a national association of SWM service operators. There were also submitted proposals for the creation of a group/ work committee in the field of solid waste management. Finally a list of proposals will be developed in order to submit it to the Government.

At the beginning of the regional conference, North RDA Director, Ion Bodrug talked about the prerequisites for the development of solid waste management sector in the context of regional development policy. However, representatives of MRDC and MoE, as well as GIZ advisors presented relevant information about Waste Management Zones in North Development Region, inter-municipal cooperation and development of solid waste management infrastructure, and the need of information and awareness raising campaigns in this area. To the end of regional conference, participants discussed all these issues in groups and then formulated conclusions and have jointly established an action plan.

According to the Regional Sector Programme in the field of solid waste management, strategic document developed with the support of the German Government and approved by North Regional Development Council in February 2014, North Development Region is divided into two waste management zones. Zone 1 covers Singerei, Falesti, Floresti, Glodeni, Riscani, Soroca, Drochia rayons and Balti municipality. Zone 2 comprises Ocnita, Donduseni, Edinet and Briceni rayons.

The activities for selecting future regional landfill’s location in North Development Region are held within the project ‘Modernization of local public services in the Republic of Moldova’, managed by GIZ and financed by the German Government, Swedish Government and the European Union.
