On 15 September, the team of ‘Modernization of Local Public Services in the Republic of Moldova’ (MLPS) project organised together with Ungheni municipality and the Theoretical Lyceum ‘Mihai Eminescu’ a sanitation event in the central park of the town. The event was part of the Global Cleanliness movement which was carried out in parallel in 150 countries.

‘On Global Cleanliness Day we mobilised the municipal enterprises, public institutions, lyceums, colleagues and volunteer citizens and cleaned the parks and squares from our locality.   I would like to thank all who took part in this movement. We hope that this kind of initiatives will enhance the sense of responsibility of citizens with regard to cleanness keeping and environment protection’ mentioned Lilia Bernic, vice-mayor of Ungheni municipality, in charge of spatial problems and those related to municipal services.

Christina Otto, MLPS project manager: We are very glad that so many people are involved in this important mission, in particular these students with initiative which are concerned about the environment. We thank the municipality and the school management for being by our side and we hope to bring a benefit to the inhabitants of the town and contribute to the maintenance of a green and clean environment’.

Besides sanitation activities, the event served as an information action regarding separate garbage collection and raising awareness of population on the seriousness of situation in the given field. At least 100 garbage bags were collected  in the Central Park in Ungheni.
