The construction of Leova-Iargara main water pipeline began in January 2018 and now is on the final straight. It will be put into operation at the beginning of November this year. The new water pipeline, constructed with the support of the Federal Government of Germany, National Fund for Regional Development and involvement of Leova Rayon Council will provide water for over 20.000 inhabitants from the South of Moldova, ensuring their access to modern water supply and sewage services.

In this context, Maria Culesov, director of South RDA, Andrei Popusoi, Head of Project Management Division and Andrei Tocaru, MLPS/GIZ regional advisor have recently made a visit to the construction site of Leova-Iargara water main pipeline, where together with the general contractor ‘Polimer Gaz Conducte’ SRL company, representatives of the design company and the water and sewage service operator ‘Apa-Canal Leova’, technical supervisor and site engineer have monitored the carrying out of the works under the investment measure ‘Construction of Leova-Iargara main water pipeline’ as part of Leova WSS project, implemented with the support of the German Development Cooperation through GIZ via the ‘Modernization of Local Public Services in the Republic of Moldova’ (MLPS) project.

The responsible persons have found that currently the contractor was testing the welded joints on the pipes, putting into operation the equipment and landscaping the platforms. Until now, the contractor has managed to execute around 94% of the total volume of works, among which are the following: installation of main water pipelines, construction of intake and of two re-pumping stations, as well as, rehabilitation of the water treatment plant.

Also, as part of the project two overground water tanks were installed made of metal panels with a capacity of 800 m3 each and other two water tanks made of reinforced concrete situated in Iargara were rehabilitated, each with a capacity of 700 m3.

It is planned, that the new water pipeline will provide water to 28 localities in Leova rayon. In the first stage Iargara town and Leova town will be connected to the pipeline, in the second – Filipeni, Romanovca and Cupcui villages. Connection of all localities is foreseen for the end of 2020.

It is to be noted, that the investment measure ‘Construction of Leova-Iargara main water pipeline’ is part of the programme for modernization of drinking water services provided to Leova rayon localities which aims to improve the living conditions, reduce health risks of population and prevent excessive over-exploiting of natural resources and environmental pollution.

The total value of the works is around EUR 3 million or over MDL 60 million, of which EUR 2.4 million is provided by the German Government via the German Development Cooperation through GIZ, whereas EUR 600.000 are allocated by the National Fund for Regional Development and Leova Rayon Council.
