Today, on 7 April, office of the Centre RDA hosted a working meeting organized at the initiative of a group of 13 mayoresses of Ialoveni, Noi, Straseni, Hincesti and Criuleni Rayons.

The purpose of the meeting was to identify solutions to the waste problem in the localities they represent. The mayoresses attending the meeting met in an initiative group “LEND SHOULDER”. The group is a civic initiative that helps people to solve local problems with their own forces.

The mayoresses told us that although there are already three years from the approval of the National Waste Management Strategy 2013-2027, the surveys carried out in their localities showed that one of the biggest problems is the problem of garbage that is increasingly more. “Although the strategy provides solutions to the problem, there are no visible improvements in our localities. This is the reason why we have teamed up to look for solutions and improve the living conditions in our localities”, one of the participants said.

The problems identified by the members of the initiative group LEND SHOULDER are lack of temporary sites for collection of waste in the transition period until construction of regional landfills set out in the National Waste Management Strategy 2013-2027, but also awareness of the problem by the population.

Bad quality water, risk of infectious diseases, polluted soil, dirt on streets; bad smell are the main effects felt by the residents. In addition, in the absence of opportunities of the mayor’s offices to arrange authorized dumps, the State Ecological Inspectorate fines for improper waste storage, which people pay although they have no alternative.

Following the analysis of the problem, an information material was developed with data from each locality represented by the women with initiative.

The representatives of the Agency informed about the current Tender of projects announced by the Ministry of Regional Development and Construction, held in period from 15 March to 3 May 2016. The mayoresses were encouraged to join together and submit applications for funding to address the waste problem regionally.

The specialists of the Centre RDA also assured the participants to the meeting that they will provide ongoing support at the request of the mayoresses to write applications for funding or to organize public awareness campaigns.
