The North, Centre and ATU Gagauzia development regions benefit from new support from the German Government. It aims to increase the capacity of institutions in the regions to plan, adapt to reality and coordinate actions in case of crisis and emergency situations in the territory, to provide immediate assistance to those affected by the crisis, as well as to prevent and reduce the impact of the crises in their communities, through initiatives from a regional development perspective.

Starting with February 24, 2022, due to the war in Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova is facing a big wave of refugees and thus facing a humanitarian crisis. To cope with the current and future crisis, the MLPS project came up with a package of assistance for development regions and communities in Moldova, which aims to:

  • Increase capacities for planning, coordinating actions, providing immediate assistance in the regions, and increase resilience in case of crisis and emergency situations, nature or man-made
  • Improve planning skills to prevent, reduce the impact of and increase recovery from crisis and emergency situations in the regions
  • Improve local services or existing infrastructure / facilities – connection to water and sanitation, improved accessibility to buildings / WASH facilities, improved solid waste management services

The planned activities will improve the technical and material base of placement and community centres in the regions, improve the training capacities of LPAs to respond to risk situations, provide first aid and disaster preparedness courses, as well as strengthen social cohesion between refugees and members of host communities.

The support provided to the development regions is financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the project “Modernisation of Local Public Services in the Republic of Moldova” (MLPS).
