In Todiresti village, Ungheni rayon, will be built a regional landfill for storing household waste. The waste will be brought from Ungheni, Nisporeni and Calarasi rayons.

At least that would have been the decision until recently. On19 August, the Todiresti Local Council decided to allocate a land of approximately 20 hectares for this purpose.

‘Nine members of Todiresti Local Council, present at the meeting, voted for the allocation of this land in order to set there a modern landfill for household waste. The meeting was attended by several locals who were satisfied by the decision of their elected officials. They welcomed the initiative to build a landfill, which will lead to the liquidation of unauthorized dumpsites and fewer illnesses among the population’, it is communicated in a press release of the Centre Regional Development Agency.

‘Most likely, this landfill will not be built in Todiresti’ has declared for ‘Express’, after 13 days of that decision, the mayor Victor Baltag. He claims that the site was visited by a specialized commission, which concluded that the land in question does not meet all the necessary parameters.

We have contacted Ludmila Guzun, Ungheni rayon president, to give us more information on the subject. ‘I do not know details about the committees concerned’ she told, and then she said: ‘If it will not be built in Todiresti, then we have to look for other lands. It would be a mistake if we miss such a project ‘.

The official also explained why she supports the project: ‘We will have only benefits. Such a project will entail the rehabilitation of access roads, more frequent environmental analyzes and many other benefits’.

The rayon president is positive to build a regional landfill in Ungheni, because in this way it will be solved the problem of waste in the localities of the rayon. ‘We know what the situation is regarding current waste storage – every way we can meet an unauthorized landfill. Once we set a landfill, the situation will be completely different’, said Ludmila Guzun.

Calarasi rayon president, Sergiu Artene, welcomes this initiative as well. He is convinced that with the construction of a landfill, the waste problem will be solved. ‘In Calarasi we are not able to build such a landfill, because we do not have a land as large as necessary,” says the president, then he added: ‘I think Ungheni is the best option because it is in the middle, between Calarasi and Nisporeni ‘.

With regard to transportation costs, Sergiu Artene affirms that it is not a problem, because they will not be quite big. “Instead of unauthorized landfill, which we have here in Calarasi rayon, some bunkers will be installed with a very large capacity. They will not be transported every day, but at a certain time, so it will be easier to bear the necessary expenses’, he added.

The president of Nisporeni rayon, Ion Artene was positive for the construction of the landfill in Ungheni as well. ‘Ours, from Nisporeni, has a small capacity, so I think it would be better to build a regional landfill’, he explained.

Why Ungheni?

‘Because Ungheni is the largest producer of waste, is a big city in economic terms, but also because the infrastructure is more developed’, explained Ludmila Guzun.

The idea of creating such a landfill was taken from Romania, following a study visit on waste management of local public authorities from Ungheni, Nisporeni and Calarasi rayons and the Ministry of Regional Development and Construction, Ministry of Environment and Centre Regional Development Agency.

So far, there is not known when the construction of such a deposit begins and when it will be completed.
