On 6 December 2016, a workshop on energy efficiency attended by experts in the field, representatives of Ministry of Regional Development and Construction (MRDC), Ministry of Economy, Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) and academic community from the country took place.

The event was organised by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Moldova (CCI) in partnership with Energy Efficiency Agency (EEA) and supported by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ under the ‘Modernization of Local Public Services in the Republic of Moldova’ (MSPL) project.

The aim of the workshop was to disseminate the best practices acquired by the experts at the International EUREM 2016 Conference held in October in Berlin, Germany.  Also, aspects related to sustainability of rayon energy manager position and capacity development in the field of energy efficiency in public buildings were discussed.

‘88% of energy sources in our country are imported, which makes us dependent on factors we are unable to control. Therefore, the energy efficiency and renewable energy sources are a priority area for the Republic of Moldova’, stated Ion Cozma, vice-director of EEA.

‘The workshop is a possibility for the experts to share with their colleagues the knowledge gained and best practices acquired at the International EUREM 2016 Conference. This would not be possible without the support of the German Development Cooperation through GIZ, which has been involved in this field and supporting it since 2011. This event will serve as a platform to discuss the successes achieved together in energy efficiency’, mentioned Mihai Bilba, vice-director of CCI.

Dietrich Hahn, GIZ/MLPS International Senior Advisor: ‘Several years ago, together with MRDC and RDAs we have developed Regional Sector Plans in energy efficiency for public buildings. This was in fact the beginning of coherent planning in this field. The European Union has earmarked funds for the development of technical designs in energy efficiency. In this regard, we need well-trained experts both in the public and private sectors. That is why GIZ has been supporting for several years the participation of experts at the International EUREM Conference. For, the mission of the experts returning to the country is to share the knowledge gained and best practices acquired with other experts’.

The project ‘Modernization of local public services in the Republic of Moldova’ (MLPS) is implemented by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ and is financially supported by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Swedish Government, the Romanian Government, the European Union and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
