On 3 September, the Minister of Environment Valentina Tapis participated in a working meeting with the ministries involved in the debate on the draft opinion on the draft law on waste.

The draft law on waste was submitted as legislative initiative (no. 241 of June 19, 2014) by a group of Members of the Parliament, relying on the provisions of the European Integration Agenda, transposed in the Waste Management Strategy, approved by Government Decision No. 248 of 10.04.2013. The Draft Law on Waste transposes the Framework Directive 2008 /98/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 November 2008 on waste and repealing certain Directives, and a number of provisions of other 9 EU acts into national law.

The many objections and comments expressed concerning the draft legislative initiative confirm the complexity and importance of the submitted document, although not all suggestions fall under the EU Directives.

After reviewing the suggestions from the received opinions, the meeting participants agreed in principle on the General Opinion on the draft law mentioned above and expressed their support to the legislative initiative. They also noted the strategic importance of this law for the Republic of Moldova in order to establish legal standards for waste and resource management aligned to EU standards, environmental protection and human health, to ensure fulfillment of the obligations undertaken by the Republic of Moldova following the ratification of international treaties governing waste.
