Today, 4 February 2015, within the National Bureau of Statistics was launched the project ‘Improvement of regional statistics in the Republic of Moldova’ with a conference attended by:

  • Mr Pirkka Tapiola – Ambassador of EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova
  • Mr José CERVERA-FERI – STATREG Project Team Leader

Regional statistics of good quality are required for the design, monitoring and evaluation of regional development policies, helping policy makers to direct more successfully social needs, identify opportunities for economic development, monitor environment objectives and the allocation of public investments. Regional statistics also serve for various socio-economic research, public information, and provide the necessary data to compile regional accounts (regional GDP), and macroeconomic indicators to monitor the development of the regions from Moldova.

The aim of EU assistance through the project ‘Improvement of regional statistics in the Republic of Moldova’ is to strengthen the capacity of statistics producers, in particular the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) to improve methodological aspects of regional statistics and their dissemination. Another goal of the project is the capacity building of key policy makers (Ministry of Regional Development and Construction (MRDC), Regional Development Agencies (RDAs), local public authorities (LPAs)) to access, use and understand regional statistics.

The project officially started in November 2014 and is implemented by a consortium led by GFA (Germany) and DEVStat (Spain), AAM (Hungary) and the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic and will last until November 2016. The total budget allocated for implementation of the project is EUR 2 million.

Technical Activities

The project will be implemented through a series of technical activities involving NBS, MRDC and RDA. It will take place in two stages:

Design phase. During the design phase, experts from the EU Member States and Moldova will establish a catalog of regional statistics in comparison with EU standards and best practices in order to identify specific methodological improvements to be made.

Development stage. At this stage of development, capacity building activities will focus on the staff of NBS, MRDC, RDAs. MRDC will receive improved IT tools for monitoring and evaluation of regional programmes.

In addition, the NBS will be helped to design an optimization plan for its territorial structures, according to Eurostat recommendations.
