A simple water pipe managed to fundamentally change the way of life of the inhabitants from Rosu village, Cahul rayon. For three years, people have said goodbye to carrying water in buckets and the thought that they could have no water.

All of these is due to the Romanian Government which has invested big amounts of money for people to be connected to the water supply. The project amounted to MDL 2.6 million.
‘The water pipe was built from zero. Everything is according to the project. People’s contribution was only related to the connection of homes to the central system. The remaining costs were covered by the project’ says the Mayor of Rosu village, Nicolae Sevirenco.

Supply networks have a total length of 14.3 kilometers and provide approximately 800 households with water.

‘At the moment, 80% of households from the village are connected to the water pipe. Along the way, those who were away or were not able to connect, do the connection now. At the same time, the school, medical unit, kindergarten and businesses who wanted to have quality water benefit from it’ says the mayor.

People have forgotten what it is to carry water from kilometers away. Also, the water was not so clean, with different kind of salt and even plants were suffering from it sometimes. Taking into consideration that comfort costs money, it is paid MDL 12 per cubic meter of water.

‘There is water. We have the possibility to grow some tomatoes and some flowers. We use it. Compared with that of the wells, tap water is much better’, says Tamara Mititelu, a resident of Rosu village.

‘It is much better with this new water because it is clean. It’s good. I am already 87 years old, so I can no longer carry water from the well’, said another resident.

The three wells were the only rescue for Rosu villagers. In dry summers people barely had water for consumption. Once the locals have been connected to the water supply, they have forgotten what is water shortages and even their gardens are more green.

‘It is quality water. The water is coming from Prut and it is natural. It can not be compared with the groundwater from the locality’, said another resident.

The help of Romania does not stop there. The local kindergarten is one of the 774 preschool institutions from Moldova which benefited from Financial and Technical Assistance Programme provided by the Romanian Government for preschool institutions in the Republic of Moldova.

‘The amount that we had was about MDL 1 million. That is MDL 986,000 of which the building was thermo insulated and exterior doors and windows changed’, says the director of kindergarten from Rosu village, Elena Mititelu.

For the next year, it is expected the construction of 19 km of sewerage, which will be connected to the treatment plant in Cahul. The project cost is EUR 960,000.

This project will have two phases. In the first phase will be implemented the central route, which will take over 19 km of route. German Government is to come with a funding of EUR 770,000. In the second stage, the Romanian Government comes up with a project co-financing of EUR 190,000’, says the mayor of the locality.

Due to the fact that there is money available, there are a lot of plans.

‘We hope that by the end of the year the contract with the contractor will be signed and works start. Completion of the project will be in 2017’, added Nicolae Sevirenco.
Rosu village has 3.700 inhabitants.
