A simple water pipe managed to fundamentally change the life of residents of Duruitoarea Veche village, Râşcani rayon. The people no longer carry water in buckets and no longer go to the toilet in the back yard. They now have automatic washing machines and modern baths. The aid came from Germans who made a whole village happy by providing 2.3 million EUR.

The residents of Duruitoarea Veche already forgot what it was like bringing water from kilometers away. And this is all due to the fact that they are now connected to the water pipe. In a few months they will also benefit of a centralized sewerage system.

Efimia Glasu has never had any second thoughts when she had to pay one thousand lei to have water inside her home. For many years she wanted to have the conditions that the people living in multi-flat buildings had.

So far 118 houses of a total of 170 in Duruitoarea Veche have been connected to the water pipe.

“We can have a bath, we also have a washing machine that we can use. In the past it was very difficult, we used to bring water from wells”, the resident of Duruitoarea Veche, Cristina Banari said.

“Here we have the toilet, and this is the place where we will have a shower cabin. I am very happy”, the resident of Duruitoarea Veche village, Elenea Ursu said.

As the comfort costs money, some villagers think that the water should be cheaper. And, to save some money, they sometimes bring water from the well.

In the following months, the treatment plant will be modernized from sources allocated by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ.

“The technical papers for reconstruction and modernization of the water treatment plant are ready. The value of this project is 8.2 million lei”, said the deputy mayor of Costesti town, Ludmila Pelin.

330 thousand residents of the northern part of the country now have access to running water. The length of the water pipes in the North region is about two thousand km, which is 22 per cent of the total length of pipes in the country.
