On 1-2 December, in the North Development Region of the country were organised public consultations on the Environmental Impact Assessment Documentation (EIAD) for the Integrated Waste Management System for Waste Management Zone (WMZ) no.8.

The event was attended by representatives of Local Public Administration level I and II from Edinet, Briceni, Ocnita and Donduseni rayons; representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment (MARDE) and North Regional Development Agency (RDA); as well as advisors of the ‘Modernisation of Local Public Services in the Republic of Moldova’ project, implemented by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ.   

During two days of public consultations, GIZ/MLPS advisors showcased examples of best practices in waste management, projects with elements of waste management from Edinet, Briceni and Donduseni, but also the risks, impact and benefits for the environment of the projects concerned.  

It should be pointed out that on 3 November 2017, the first meeting of the Regional Sector Commission in the field of Solid Waste Management (SWM RSC) from the North Development Region, which was created with the support of GIZ under the ‘Modernisation of Local Public Services in the Republic of Moldova’ (MLPS) project took place. During the meeting, the members of the Commission discussed the current situation in SWM sector, the experience and initiatives of regionalising waste management services, as well as elected the management body of the Commission.

Integrated waste management system for WMZ no.8 includes four rayons from the North Development Region of the country (Edineț, Briceni, Ocnita and Donduseni). The Environmental Impact Assessment Documentation (EIAD) for the Integrated Waste Management System planned for Waste Management Zone (WMZ) no.8 shall contain the following activities:

  •     Collection of municipal waste from urban and rural areas;
  •     Separate collection of recyclable waste from urban and rural areas;
  •     Transport and transfer of waste to waste management facilities and construction of two domestic waste transfer stations in Edinet and Briceni towns and a transfer station for recyclable waste in Donduseni town;
  •     Separate collection of green (vegetal) waste from urban areas and their composting at the composting station in Donduseni town;
  •     Sorting of recyclable waste collected separately at the sorting station in Edinet town;
  •     Disposal of unused waste at the regional landfill in Donduseni town;
  •     Promotion of individual composting.

The project for the management of solid waste in WMZ no. 8 will contribute to improvement of solid waste related services, reduction of environment pollution and negative impact on the health of the communities in the four rayons of the Republic of Moldova. The Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment (MARDE), North Regional Development Agency (North RDA), North Regional Development Council (North RDC) and LPAs from Edineț, Briceni, Ocnita and Donduseni rayons are the key partners of the Project.
