Today, 15 September 2015, Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Construction Anatol Usatîi met with a team of the World Bank (WB) represented by Tamara Sulukhia, leader of infrastructure and sustainable development programme for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine; David Michaud, senior specialist in water sector and Kirsten Hommann, economist. WB team’s in Moldova objective is providing technical assistance to define the scope of rural development.

Deputy Minister Anatol Usatîi noted that the World Bank has been and remains an important partner that offers assistance to the Republic of Moldova in various fields. ‘The Ministry of Regional Development and Construction is the institution that coordinates several projects on regional infrastructure, including water supply and sanitation, and cooperates with other ministries in this area. Water supply and sanitation in rural areas is a priority at national level. In this regard, with the support of institutional partner – the German Development Cooperation through GIZ – regional sector plans have been developed’, said the Deputy Minister Anatol Usatîi.

In turn Tamara Sulukhia, leader of infrastructure and sustainable development programme for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine stressed that the World Bank is implementing since 2014 projects related to water supply and sanitation, and ‘the reason we are in Moldova is to identify the needs of the population in rural areas regarding water supply and sanitation, and then we will take these into account in the implementation of our projects’, said Tamara Sulukhia, leader of infrastructure and sustainable development programme for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine.

The objective of technical assistance (TA) from the World Bank is to help the Government of the Republic of Moldova is to identify priority areas for investments to facilitate rural development and contribute to improving the quality of life in rural areas. Within TA it will be provided assistance to identify gaps in access to services and infrastructure in rural areas.

World Bank (WB) is an international organization that provides financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. WB’s mission is to reduce poverty and improve quality of life by creating economic opportunities. Moldova joined the World Bank in 1992 and to date 62 projects have been implemented by means of which was allocated about USD 1 billion. Currently, WB’s portfolio in Moldova includes 7 active projects, representing total commitments amount of USD 162,2 million. Areas of support include regulatory framework reform and business development, education, social care, e-Government, health, agriculture and others.
