In total, 60 files submitted to Moldova Eco Energetica, 2013 edition, competed for the title of the best project in the use and promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency. The files included in the competition were reviewed in three stages:

(1) examination of submitted files by the evaluation panel

(2) field monitoring visit

(3) decision of the Coordination Council.

18 finalists were appointed as winners of 2013 edition.

One of the success stories awarded by “Moldova Eco Energetica” Award Ceremony is the street lighting project for six communities in Soroca rayon.

Street lighting services benefit the 2,200 inhabitants of Tătărăuca Veche. A modern and economical system of street lighting was developed for the six communities with financial support of the  “Modernisation of local public services in Moldova” project, managed by the German International Development Cooperation through GIZ. GIZ has provided support through the North Regional Development Agency.

“This award is a recognition of the community’s commitment to this public service and effective communication between citizens, local authorities and development partners,” the mayor Liviu Raischi says.

In total, 350 LED technology based light fixtures were installed. They are operated by 13 electricity record devices. The network has a length of over 21 km. The use of such modern facilities lowers the electricity consumption costs by twice. Annual savings will amount to USD 117,000 annually as compared to the use of classical solutions, which are inefficient in energy terms. The cost of investment amounts to over MDL 3.4 million. The lighting system has been operational since January 2013.

The street lighting service is managed by the municipal enterprise “Tatarauca Service”, established in 2012. The monthly cost paid by each household is 10 lei.

The employees of the enterprise are consulted by GIZ throughout the whole project implementation period. Moreover, the company office was renovated with financial support provided by GIZ, due to which equipment for a proper operation was also purchased. The value of investments for the development of the service provider amounts to about 1 million lei. At the same time the municipal enterprise also started delivering waste management services.

On November 22, 2013 the street lighting project in Tătărăuca Veche, Soroca rayon, was awarded second place in the category of “Successful models for energy efficiency in the community” by the Good Practices Program.

Under the energy efficiency component GIZ also supports another pilot project, namely enhancing energy efficiency of Orhei hospital, awarded in 2012 at Moldova Eco Energetica Award Ceremony as “The Best Public Sector Project”.

Gala Moldova Eco Energetica is the largest competition awarding successful initiatives in renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors. The competition is organized by the Ministry of Economy and Energy Efficiency Agency, in partnership with Moldova Energy and Biomass Project, funded by the European Union and co-financed and implemented by UNDP Moldova. In 2012 the German government awarded 5 of the winners of the competition.
