Today, 29 April, in Cimislia was held the joint meeting of the Regional Sector Working Group (RSWG) and the Project Working Group (PWG 3) in the field of solid waste management in South Development Region (SDR).

The objective of the RSWG and PWG 3 meeting for Waste Management area 3 is to coordinate the work plan for 2015 and the presentation of the progress achieved by them in 2014-2015.

However, at today’s event was presented the progress of the technical and institutional assistance project in the treatment of solid waste in the South Region of Moldova. The project is implemented within the international cooperation programme of the Czech Republic and its objectives were discussed during the meeting:

  • Improvement of the current solid waste management in southern regions of Moldova;
  • Reduce the risk of environmental contamination;
  • Improve the overall living conditions on medium term, which will contribute to the region’s economic growth and standard of living;

And the progress of the project is:

  • There were geology and geodesy works performed and other land investigations of regional landfills in the amount of 100% for Sub-region 1: Cimislia, Leova, Basarabeasca and Sub-region 2: Causeni, Stefan Voda;
  • A General location and construction of solid waste landfills Plan was developed;
  • General plans for all transfer solutions were developed;
  • There were received decisions of Causeni and Cimislia municipal councils on land allocation for regional landfill.

Also, at the working meeting, it has been presented the progress of changing the land use in the waste management area 3, SDR. It was mentioned, that currently is unrolled the change of land use destination:

  • Cahul regional landfill location;
  • Taraclia and Cania transfer station location.

Following the activities undertaken so far, it was concluded that all objectives were achieved as planned. Afterwards, there were presented the activities proposed for 2015 in the field of solid waste management in SDR. Some of them are achieved, and some are in the process of development.

We would like to recall that during 2014, there occurred the assessment activities of the current situation regarding solid waste management, selection of land for waste management facilities, various studies, and the description of basic conditions for project development.

The event was attended by representatives of RSWG, GIZ experts, experts from the Czech Development Agency, and representatives of the Embassy of the Czech Republic to the Republic of Moldova, representatives of the Ministry of Regional Development and Construction, Ministry of Environment and South Regional Development Agency.

We would like to note, that projects’ activity is fully supported by the Ministry of Regional Development and Construction and the Ministry of Environment and fully complies, both with regional policy and in the environmental protection, promoted by both ministries.
