Representatives of North Regional Development Agency (North RDA) and experts from ‘Modernization of local public services in the Republic of Moldova’ (MLPS) project managed by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ, met in Falesti Rayon Council, in the context of initiating the process of drafting the feasibility study for the viable project concept ‘Improving water and sanitation services in Falesti rayon (Falesti town, Falesti village and Calugar village)’.

 ‘Once developed, the feasibility study for the project of water supply and sanitation in Falesti will have increased chances for funding. No, it is important that we together with experts be careful to details that could make the project’s implementation difficult. I am also considering legal issues related to land properties where work could be done’, said the Director of North RDA Ion Bodrug.

We would like to recall that under the Regional Sector Programme (RSP), water supply and sanitation (WSS) sector, Inter-ministerial Commission responsible for WSS selected, on 11 February 2015, five viable project concepts out of the 11 initially accepted possible project concepts. Visits of experts,  like the one that took place today in Falesti town, recently occurred in Edinet, Drochia, Sangerei and Balti loclities, where they discussed issues related to financial, technical and legal aspects in order to initiate the process of drafting the feasibility study on water and sanitation system.

Project concepts were developed with support from the Swedish Government and the European Union.

In North Development Region, the 5 viable project concepts, for which feasibility studies are currently being developed, were designed under MLPS project, intervention area 2, ‘Regional planning and programming’. These are:

  • Balti municipality – Improving water and sanitation services in residential rayon ‘Slobozia’ and Elizaveta village, Balti municipality;
  • Edinet rayon – Optimize water supply and sanitation system maintenance costs in Edinet and Cupcini towns;
  • Sangerei rayon – Extension of sanitation system in Sangerei town;
  • Drochia rayon – Improving water supply and sanitation services in Drochia town;
  • Falesti rayon – Improving water and sanitation services in Falesti rayon (Falesti town, Falesti village and Calugar village).

In Falesti rayon is the worst situation from the North Development Region regarding drinking water quality. Water in most mine wells contains fluoride 2-3 times exceeding limits permitted by health standards. In Risipeni village, for example, there is not sufficient water even in mine wells, residents are forced to travel long distances to transport drinking water.
