Moldova will be cleaner. Authorities aim to create, by 2027, a European system of waste collection and processing. According to the document proposed by the Ministry of Environment, our country will be divided into 8 regions for waste management and 7 regional landfills will be built. It will also be introduced a sanitation fee, a fact which displeases some people, especially those from villages. During a meeting with mayors from about 100 localities, the minister of environment proposed that in all villages across Moldova is installed waste urns. Gheorghe Salaru argues that economic agents who will handle the collection of recyclable waste will be able to sell it in other countries priced between MDL 1.000 and EUR 1.000 per ton. Thus, the business promises to be both profitable for investors and for the common citizen who can contribute to a healthier environment.

Gheorghe Salaru, the Minister of Environment: ‘paper can be easily sold for MDL 1 per kg and this is money that economic agents worried by recyclables can obtain. An added benefit is that these kilogrammes of waste paper will save many acres of forest that will not be cut in order to get that paper ‘.

The main condition for recyclable waste to be exploited is that they are selectively collected by population. For example, Boscana mayor, Anatolie Vantu applied to a pilot project and used European money to split metal waste urns throughout the locality. In the future he plans to install plastic bins for recyclable waste, each with special destination: bottles, paper, plastic or metal.

Anatolie Vantu, Mayor, Boscana village, Criuleni: ‘At the moment, we have set several public urns in Boscana commune where street waste and municipal waste accumulates. But now we want to determine the population to gather them separately’.

Besides the fact that the villagers will have to collect the waste selectively, they will pay MDL 50 each month for sanitation services. But people are dissatisfied and prefer to throw waste in unauthorized dumpsites in the locality.

Anatolie Vantu, Mayor, Boscana village, Criuleni: ‘They are still living with conveniences of previous years, taking out waste where it is convenient. There is also a prejudice that they don’t want to enrich someone, they do not understand that it is a chargeable service, it has a provider that has a prime cost and obviously it needs a minimum profit to support the company’.

To note that in the city capital waste sorting began a year ago. Auto sanitation provider installed on waste collection platforms about 2.500 bins. Plastic bins were bought in Germany with almost EUR 170.000, the amount offered by Autosanitation provider.
