It was held the first meeting of the working groups (WG) in Solid waste management (SWM) in the Development Region North (DRN), an event planned in collaboration with Regional Development Agency North (RDA North) within the project “Modernization of local public services (MLPS) in the Republic of Moldova”, implemented by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ.

By organizing this working meeting, the organizers sought to coordinate the Action plan of the team of experts in SWM for 2014-2015. To this end, there were presented the Action plan, approaches related to its development, project development phases, expected results and project risks.

The working meeting was attended by representatives of existing regional sector WG and local public administration representatives of DRN, RDA North, GIZ and NGOs.

“A sanitation action that lasts one day per year, as “Hai, Moldova!” is known and welcomed by all. Now is the time to say “Hai, Regiunea Nord!” (Come on, North region!). Today’s meeting is part of a series of events on the same subject, is an additional confirmation of the fact that it takes a lot of work to clean the country’s regions,” mentioned Stefan Todirascu, GIZ consultant in planning and regional programming.

In late 2013, within MLPS project, there were finalized Regional sector programs (SRP) in SWM for DRN and in February 2014, they were approved at the meeting of the Regional Development Council North (RDC North).

The program included planning activities for setting up waste management systems on waste management areas. Central and local public authorities, as well as regional development agencies are responsible for carrying out the activities of these plans.

In order to provide support for the implementation of the Action Plan to the programs mentioned, MLPS project is planning to develop Feasibility studies / Environmental impact assessment for regional waste management systems. This activity is fully supported by the Ministry of Regional Development and Construction and the Ministry of Environment and is fully fit both in regional and in the environment protection policy promoted by both ministries.

So far, in regional planning sector for SWM field, there were organized five workshops on capacity building of sector planning at regional and local level within MLPS project in DRN. Regionally, there are expected more efficient public services in SWM, including optimizing the quality level of this service by means of modernization actions in accordance with European standards, and provide a step-by-step connection of the SWM service to national systems.
