An event of great importance for residents of Soldanesti and Rezina rayons took place. It was launched the separate waste collection service. The activity was attended by the Prime Minister, Iurie Leanca and the German Ambassador to Moldova, Mrs Ulrike Maria Knotz.

The action started with a sketch ‘For health and a cleaner environment, we collect waste separately’, presented by students from ‘Alexei Mateevici’ Lyceum from Şoldăneşti town.

Development project of separate waste collection management was initiated four years ago. It covered all localities of Soldanesti rayon. Parts of the service are some villages in Rezina rayon. The event culminated with the ribbon cutting and demonstrating the specific of specialized equipment that will be involved in waste collection.

The total budget of the pilot project of solid waste management in Soldanesti and Rezina rayons exceeds EUR 2.2 million. Financial support was provided by the German Government. Şoldăneşti Rayon Council contributed with over EUR 10 thousand.

As mentioned at the event, overall, from the new service will benefit over 45,000 people in 27 localities of Soldanesti and Rezina rayons. Citizens will collect waste in four categories and will place them in the appropriate containers. Although it is claimed that the project was welcome to the villagers, mayors argue that more needs to be done in training citizens.

According to the project, it is scheduled for 2015 the construction of three modern landfills around Şoldăneşti town and in Răspopeni and Cuşmirca villages.
