The progress of the technical documentation development under the ‘Improvement of water supply and sanitations services in Drochia town’ project was examined on Wednesday, 10 October at the meeting organised at North RDA. The meeting was attended by the representatives of the ‘Modernization of Local Public Services in the Republic of Moldova’ (MLPS) project implemented by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ, local public authorities from Drochia town, North RDA specialists and designers.
Currently, the second out the four phases of the planning/design for the water supply and sewage system in Drochia town is being carried out. At this stage it is necessary to perform the quality tests of water from the five wells. The water tests results will determine the future decisions on establishing the water source to supply water for Drochia town or the possibility to build a water treatment plant. According to specialists from Drochia municipality the water tests procedures will last two weeks.
At the meeting, the North RDA director Vitalii Povonschii underlined that the investments in water quality are a priority, followed by the investments in the water supply system. ‘Having in mind the health of the population, it is vital that the people have access to quality drinking water’, mentioned the North RDA director.
In his turn, Dietrich Hahn, GIZ/MLPS international senior advisor noted that the water tests are of utmost importance, but also, a very clear indication from the European Union which finances the project. ‘Before continuing the planning and executing the construction works it is necessary to ensure that the water from these respective sources is safe to drink according to accepted rules. We do not rely on tests previously done and wish to know the current situation in this respect’, mentioned Dietrich Hahn. Also, the GIZ/MLPS international senior advisor suggested that those involved in project implementation begin discussing with citizens the tariff for water delivery service, as well, as other important aspects.
The importance of new water tests being done from the five wells was, also, supported by Valentina Plesca, national senior advisor and Alexandru Boesu, national advisor in contract implementation.
The participants discussed, also, the financing of additional design volumes. ‘All changes cost money and require time, however the project budget is limited’ mentioned Dietrich Hahn.
In Drochia town 4.6 km of under pressure drinking water pipeline will be rehabilitated, as well as, 8.5 km of water supply networks. In addition to this, the water supply networks in Drochia will be extended by 8.9 km. As part of the project, 1 water treatment plant will be constructed, while 2 pumping stations, 7 water towers and 6 drinking water tanks will be rehabilitated. Additionally, 7 hydrophore stations will be installed in the multi storied residential complexes. Over 17.300 inhabitants of Drochia will be connected to the water supply system.
The project ‘Improvement of water supply and sanitation services in Drochia town’ is financed by the European Union in cooperation with the ‘Modernization of Local Public Services in the Republic of Moldova’ project implemented by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment and North RDA and financially supported by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Swedish Government, the Romanian Government and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The estimated value of the WSS project in Drochia town is EUR 1.5 million, with the contribution of beneficiaries in the amount of EUR 162.000
