On Thursday, September 25, 2014, the Minister of Environment, Valentina Tapis, met with representatives of Germany’s KfW Financial Corporation, which resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the central environmental authority in Moldova and the KfW Corporation on extending the centralized water supply Chisinau – Calarasi – Străşeni, with subsequent connection of rural areas of these rayons to this system.

The document outlines the stakeholder’ tasks and the steps to be taken for the implementation of this project, which has been identified as a priority in the Strategy for Water Supply and Sanitation (2014-2018). At the same time, the Government of Moldova and the Federal Republic of Germany identified the project as a priority in bilateral cooperation during the Moldovan-German negotiations held in June 2014 in Chisinau.

The project provides for development of a feasibility study for extension of water pipeline, in collaboration with international experts, to be followed by design and construction of networks to settlements. The unification of water supply systems for Chisinau, Străşeni and Calarasi, gradually connecting about 20 rural localities located along the water pipeline, is a strategic element of infrastructure in the context of regionalization of utility services.

Creating a regional water supply system by connecting the water supply systems of Chişinău, Străşeni and Calarasi in a common institutional and operational system will provide access to drinking water according to sanitary norms, increase the quality of water supply and sanitation in the localities concerned. After completion of construction of the main pipeline and connection of the local water supply systems to it, a single institutional structure for the management of water supply systems in Chisinau, Străşeni and Calarasi will be created.
