During 1-3 December 2015, local public authorities in the three development regions (North, Centre and South) of the country gathered within a regional conference to discuss new ways of solid waste management based on inter-municipal cooperation. The event was held in Edinet (1 December), Cimislia (2 December) and Ungheni (3 December) and was organized by the Ministry of Environment (MoE) and the Ministry of Regional Development and Construction (MRDC), supported by German Development Cooperation through GIZ under the project ‘Modernization of local public services in the Republic of Moldova’ (MLPS).

The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Regional Development and Construction, Ministry of Environment, Embassy of French Republic to the Republic of Moldova, central and local public authorities of level I and II, sanitation service operators and NGOs.

Within three days of the conference representatives of MRDC, MoE and GIZ/MLPS advisors presented relevant information about waste management zones in development regions, inter-municipal cooperation and solid waste management infrastructure development, and the need of information and awareness raising campaigns in this area.

Adrian Delinschii, Deputy Minister of Environment: ‘The Ministry of Environment is making every effort to achieve Waste Management Strategy in Moldova. Unfortunately, solid waste management is a reserved area in development compared to other countries, therefore we and the Ministry of Regional Development and Construction seek solutions to elucidate this problem’.

Sergiu Cecan, head of relations with regional development institutions Department within the MRDC: ‘The Ministry of Regional Development and Construction supports the initiative of organizing this conference in three development regions of the country north, center and south because through such events we can transmit to public authorities new management methods identified by national and international experts with whom we cooperated in this regard’.

Through conferences organized in three development regions of the country, the organizers aimed to inform local public administrations about the current situation in the field of solid waste management, as well as on working with them in order to develop feasibility studies for setting up integrated waste management systems, in accordance with the Waste Management Strategy in Moldova for 2013-2027, approved by Government Decision no. 248 of 10 April 2013.

The project ‘Modernization of local public services in the Republic of Moldova’ is implemented by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ and is financially supported by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Swedish Government, the Romanian Government, the European Union and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
