In August 2013, implementation of the “Introduction of Innovative Waste Management Practices in Selected Towns in Georgia, Moldova and Armenia” started with the financial support of the European Commission through the Joint Operational Program the Black Sea Basin 2007-2013.

The project aims to help improve the environmental quality and living standards in the countries of the Black Sea Basin by developing cross-border partnerships and cooperation for introducing innovative waste management practices in selected cities: Kutaisi (Georgia), Ungheni (Republic of Moldova) and Ararat (Armenia).

Representatives of both local public authorities and non-governmental organizations in the four countries participate in project implementation: Kutaisi City Hall (main partner) and the Association Union of Scientists in Imereti “Spectre” / Georgia /, Ungheni LPA I and the Regional Center for Sustainable Development / Republic of Moldova / Town Council, Ararat LPA I and the Environment Survival Association/Armenia/, Ecological Consultancy Centre Association Galati/Romania.

During the project implementation period, representatives of towns involved in the project will become familiar with innovative waste management practices used in the European Union, based on the Romanian model, in order to apply them in their localities.

The project provides for organization of study visits and training workshops on waste management.   The experts from Romania will review the conditions concerning the waste management in Kutaisi, Ungheni and Ararat cities, will formulate recommendations based on which the stakeholders will develop an action plan for waste management. Various information and promotion materials on modern waste management methods will be developed and published in the national languages of project participants. The project provides for organizational measures and selective waste collection in Kutaisi and composting in Ararat.

For participants in Ungheni, a town which has some experience in selective waste collection,  participation in the project is an opportunity to acquire new knowledge and share experience.

The project includes implementation of environmental education programs for pupils, with particular attention to environmental education and other target groups (teachers, journalists). The project duration is 2 years.

On Monday, November 18, 2013, 14:00, in the Conference Hall of Ungheni City Council the presentation of “Introduction of Innovative Waste Management Practices in Selected Towns in Georgia, Moldova and Armenia” project will be held, where representatives of local authorities, NGOs, high schools and the media were invited.
